HISTORY: Richard was never a loud child, and always struggled to make friends. This wasn’t helped by the fact that he was home schooled, and was always the ‘weird kid that nobody recognised’ whenever he left his house. It wasn’t quite so bad for the first few years of his life; as he had a good friend in Daniel Hughes; their families were good friends; but the Hughes moved away when Richard was six, leaving him completely friendless. More than anything, Richard wanted friends and would try to play with the muggle children – yet since he hadn’t been to school, he didn’t have many social skills and in turn, the other children bullied him. When he would return home upset, instead of sympathy, his father would shout at him. Being a pureblood family, his father detested muggles – thinking they were below him – so he would tell Richard off for even attempting to communicate with them. His mother would simply say one thing. The same thing, every time it happened. “You’re much better than them, Richard.” And then she would leave him alone so she could get on with the house work. For a while, when he would get bullied, Richard would reply by staring at the ground and saying, “My mum says I’m better than you.” Though he never really believed this, and more than anything, it spurred the bullies on.
His father would try and get Richard to mingle with children from pureblood wizarding children; but the ones who didn’t just want to know him for his money and pureblood status, just thought he was weird.
When his father came home from work one day, he told the family how he had run into the Hughes and that their boy, Daniel, was a ‘right little champ, full of Slytherin pride’ and that Richard would do well to be more like him. Unappreciated at home and bullied whenever he left the house; it was these reasons and a yearning for acceptance that made Richard want to be in Slytherin; and sure enough when he went to Hogwarts, Slytherin was the house he was put in.
At Hogwarts, Richard hoped more than anything that he would finally make some friends, and stop feeling so invisible, but being shy, quiet, socially awkward and far less assuming than the rest of his house, the other Slytherins soon saw him as the ‘weak link’ [and quite frankly, a bit of a weirdo] and were no nicer to him than any of his neighbours at home. Richard was never one for house rivalry, but since he was so shy he never really spoke to the other houses much and they just took this as him thinking he was too good to speak to them. He recognised Daniel, who was also placed in Slytherin, straight away – but Daniel didn’t seem to know who he was, and on the few occasions Daniel did speak to Richard, he called him Barry. Truthfully, even the Hogwarts thought he was a little weird, and it was written on one of Nurse Tyler’s files that “Richard appears withdrawn. He spends the majority of his time alone and appears alienated. He is not good in social situations, preferring to be on his own. He is however a highly intellectual young man. He appears methodical and is interested in technology and the way things work.” It also mentioned that further assessments were recommended.
When home for Easter in his fourth year, his neighbour went a step too far with the bullying; and Richard was left feeling angry and humiliated. So much so that he got drunk on his father’s stock, and after checking nobody was home, tried to burn his neighbour’s house down. He used tissues and lighter fluids and posted them alit through the letter box; but soon saw that the neighbour’s cat was still in the house. The cat had never done anything to him, at all – not even so much as a hiss – so Richard tried to put out the fire… by peeing in the letterbox. Unfortunately, it was during this time, that the bully’s mother came home and caught him. Richard was forced to spend the remainder of the Easter holidays in a psychiatric unit, and was told he must carry out community payback for the following three summers. As it happens, Daniel was also made to do community service these summers for allegedly stealing a pick ‘n’ mix. Daniel started out, just like everyone else; calling him names such as ‘panty sniffer’, ‘weird kid’ and ‘melon f**ka.’ At this point, Daniel still couldn’t even get Richard’s name right, still calling him ‘Barry’. This then continued when back at Hogwarts, too. It was during their second summer during Community Payback, that Richard stood up for himself;
“You expect me to tell you anything after how you’ve treated me? All the names you’ve called me!”
“What names?”
“Weird kid, panty sniffer, virgin, freak, twat, pervert, paedophile… melon f**ka!... I just want to be your friend.”
“Sure, man.”
Now, though Daniel still sometimes use the names, it’s more jokey and Richard takes it better as he’s starting to believe they are actually friends now – that’s just how Daniel is. Daniel still often calls him Barry, but more as an affectionate nickname, rather than genuinely believing that’s his name. Richard would go as far to say that Daniel is his best friend, despite the somewhat offensive but playful banter, and if ever he needs to talk to someone, it’s Daniel he goes to see. Richard is still socially awkward, but very slowly he is starting to get more confident and learning to be himself. Richard enjoys taking photos and videos, often to the annoyance of others; though he doesn’t do this as much as when he first started at Hogwarts.
LIKES:
• Having friends
- The one thing Richard has always wanted was friends, and it's in Daniel he feels like he's finally found one.• Recording videos and taking photos - Richard has always been the type to sit back and observe; he loves to take pictures and make videos. Often people get annoyed of him randomly videoing them, and if anything, it makes him even more of an outcast.
• Community Payback - It was here that Richard and Daniel started to grow a bit closer, and it was here that, for the first time in his life, he actually started to feel like he belonged. He always says that picking litter was the best time of his life.
• Music - Richard loves music, especially the muggle band Kraftwerk.
• Graphic Novels - Call him a geek, but Richard loves reading these. They're not comic books!
DISLIKES:
• Not having friends
- Richard has never really had any real friends [though that's beginning to change]. He's always felt invisible and like he doesn't belong.• Being bullied - Richard has always been bullied from a young age, and needless to say, he hates it. It's pushed him to doing things he regrets, and almost made him someone he didn't want to be.
• Being ignored - Richard hates being ignored, and feels like it happens all the time. If he's not being bullied, then he's being overlooked. Both of which, he cannot stand.
• The pressures of his father - His father is a true Slytherin who follows Voldemort and has always put pressure on Richard to be the same. While Richard wants to do what's morally right; he also wants to be accepted by his father and thinks that the only way to do this would be to be someone who he isn't.
• Being Lonely - Needless to say, Richard hates feeling alone. Though he feels lonely a lot of the time, he particularly felt it when serving time in a psychiatric unit.
STRENGTHS:
• Intellectual
- Though very quiet, Richard is highly intellectual and does well in most his classes.• Methodical - Richard is very organised and precise and appreciates methods and systems.
• Sweet - Richard is actually quite sweet, though not many people see it since they can't get past the fact he's socially awkward, and in their words, 'weird'. He's actually quite kind, and wants to do good; but also wants to please his father who is a true Slytherin.

WEAKNESSES:
• Shy and withdrawn
– Having never really had friends, and always being bullied has made Richard both shy and withdrawn, as well as quiet; which, as it happens, makes it even more difficult for him to make friends.• Socially awkward – Another reason Richard struggles to make friends, and possibly a result of being bullied, Richard is socially awkward and a bit of an outcast. He finds social situations difficult, therefore spends a lot of time on his own.
• Occasionally loses it – Very occasionally, Richard will feel so humiliated or alienated that he loses it, causing him to do things he regrets; whether it's leaving someone [as opposed to helping them] in a bad situation because they've never treated him well, or attempting to burn his neighbour's house down.
PERSONALITY: Richard is a shy, quiet and socially awkward boy. Most people think he's weird, and can't see past it. He's unassuming, and wants to do good; but his father is is the opposite and Richard wants to please him; leaving Richard undecided as to where he should stand. Richard is slowly starting to become more confident, and beginning to like who he is.
